Effexor is used to treat mental depression, certain anxiety disorders or the symptoms of anxiety. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Effexor works by inhibiting the release or affecting the overaction of neurotransmitters that cause nerve cells within the brain to become more or less active, creating the symptoms of anxiety or depression. Effexor XR is the extended release version of Effexor, allowing for once daily doses of the medication.
